How well does your company manage the competence of its safety-critical workers?

A competence management system is necessary to enable staff to fulfil responsibilities and to perform activities to recognised standards of competence on a regular basis. Objectives of any competence management system should be to:

How effective is your competence management system (CMS) in controlling risk?

Does your system effectively address the industry legislation for managing the competence of safety critical workers?

In Great Britain this is the Railways and Other Guided transport Systems (ROGS) regulations and in Northern Ireland this is the Railways (Safety Management) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2006).

It is not always easy to get the right balance between a good robust system that fully complies with latest requirements and a system that people find simple and easy to operate and process that consistently develop staff performance.
