Independent assurance

Our risk-based assurance can provide an independent assessment of whether business risks have been identified and are being controlled effectively.

Our approach to assurance is risk-based so that attention is focused on the important issues. By being external to the organisation we can provide an independent assessment of performance; providing greater credibility of the reported information and raising difficult issues in a sensitive way. Our reports can effectively communicate findings in a way that is clear for stakeholders and focuses on risk.

A recent addition to our portfolio of independent assurance services is the assessment of competence management processes, predominantly for the UK rail industry. Our approach has been accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) and we are now able to independently assure competence management systems against the industry best practice guidance issued by the Office of Rail Regulation.

Risk Assessment

Risk assessment is the key to effective management of health and safety and is a legal requirement.

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires businesses to carry out actions that are reasonable and practicable in order to protect their workforce.

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 state that you should carry out a suitable and sufficient assessment in order to identify the risks that your workforce are exposed to whilst they carry out their duties.  This is extended to persons who are not employed by your business but who may be put at risk by the business activities. It is, of course impractical to make your premises 100 per cent safe and risk-free, which is why the risks need to be assessed.

There are various risk control approaches a business can use but in its most basic form a risk assessment is a careful examination of what could cause harm to people so that you can weigh up whether you have taken suitable precautions or should do more to prevent harm.

Accidents and ill health can ruin lives and affect your business too if output is lost, machinery is damaged, insurance costs increase or you have to go to court.
