In April 2023, Rail Professional Development held the first East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP) active learning workshop where representatives from DB Cargo and Colas Rail attended.
The workshop is part of a robust Train The Trainer Programme required for all future ETCS Trainers who will be delivering the driver training courses as part of the ECDP route signalling upgrade.
RPD’s active learning workshop focuses on the skills required by a trainer when delivering training by using the most modern adult learning techniques.
This includes the use of the RPD SimKit which simplifies the learning process and ensures learners are involved in visual and tactile experiential learning. But, that’s not all, as well as incorporating the ECDP DMI application and the use of desk simulators, this module ultimately improves the learner’s experience, moving away from conventional training mediums and also gives the Trainers confidence for the delivery of effective ETCS training going forward.
What is the RPD SimKit?
For over 15 years, the Rail Professional Development SimKit has been supporting most of the U.K. Train and Freight Operating Companies training programmes. It’s a great way to enhance users’ learning experiences by incorporating Safety Discovery Learning and experiential learning techniques.
It’s a simple tool for running tabletop simulation exercises, including:
- Training and assessment of rules, regulations and operational procedures (for normal, degraded and emergency situations)
- Emergency response
- Post incident review – investigation and re-creation of critical events and decisions
- Testing and validation of rules and procedures
We’re glad to say that we are continually improving this product so our users can get the most of it. We also include updated materials when rulebook changes require it, or at the clients request, for example ETCS bespoke components.
Our SimKit also includes, upon request, desk sized route and depot maps which helps route learning and the build-up of a route story in line with RIS-3702 and the T1108 research project (achieving a step change in route knowledge management).
SimKits are also used by investigators when investigating accidents and incidents. This enables investigators to visualise the circumstances around the event to improve performance and reduce risk. Some control departments use them during disruption management and contingency planning to aid them in seeing the bigger picture.
The product is so simple to use and has endless possibilities. Not to mention we’ve already had many positive reviews from our customers just this year alone.
