Formally accrediting/qualifying workplace skills for rail professionals

City & Guilds Accredited Programmes

Background

Over many years, rail operators have tended to fund relatively Ill-fitting certification and qualifications for safety critical training and management roles. With the push from the ORR for ongoing assessment and certification of those roles to defined standards, RPD have responded by looking at creating relevant and cost-effective accredited certification and qualifications to supplement skills development.

The solution

RPD have been working with City & Guilds to gain accreditation and qualifications for a range of operational and safety critical training and management activities.

A number of these programmes are formally recognised by City & Guilds, enabling RPD to issue Accredited Certificates and Qualifications.

This enables organisations to formally recognise the skills trainers and managers develop through these Programmes.

Individual supplement price

The price to add formal City & Guilds Accreditation or Qualification to any training for any individual Programme can be quoted as a supplement, which is added to the cost of any training.

For those that have previously attended RPD training within a certain period of time, access to accreditation is available without further training. Individuals will be given the opportunity providing we are allowed access to recent workplace evidence and they are happy to complete the associated knowledge tests.

Course & inclusive prices

For organisations wishing us to deliver company-specific courses, overall course costs can be quoted that include formal accreditation or Qualification if required. Please ask for details.

Note that prices for any City & Guilds Programmes includes enrolment, assessment, quality assurance and certification/qualification.

We offer open, in-house and bespoke development programmes that inspire people to succeed.

Accident / Incident Investigation

Our skills development programme can provide you with qualified people who are able to respond effectively to incidents and uncover the root causes.

Our programmes cover all aspects of accident investigation: initial response, incident management, root cause analysis, human factor recognition and effective reporting, including RIDDOR and we are able to offer support both after training to independently assess the effectiveness of investigations and to further develop the competence of investigators.

Our development framework encompasses a number of modules built around the safety-critical incident learning cycle, shown below:

We have programmes that focus on operational incidents through to the investigation of a personal accident. We also have a range of short courses that pick up on the specific skills of investigatory techniques such as interviewing, human factor influences, establishing cause and writing investigation reports.

Fire & Rescue Service Accident Investigator course also available.

Competence- based training

Our training will provide a risk-based approach to assessment activities with a clear focus on continuous staff improvement.

Our Competence Assessment Skills programmes are designed around the personal and interpersonal skills required of assessors, coaches and verifiers to effectively improve staff performance within a safety-critical environment.

If you work in the UK rail industry then we have designed accredited programmes for Rail Safety Workplace Coaching and Assessment, Safety Critical Internal Verifier and Effective Safety Critical Simulations all of which additionally focus on the essential skills required when improving staff performance within a safety-critical environment.

Trainer & Coaching Skills

Regulatory changes mean that a greater emphasis is now placed on the skills of trainers and their ability to deliver practical training for safety-critical staff.

We have developed a process called MCM (Modular Competence Management) that covers all of the skills required by people who deliver competence-based training and can be used to assure the ongoing competence of those trainer skills.

We have a range of “train the trainer” programmes and techniques that help to shape a trainer’s professionalism and the practical methods to revolutionise and inspire trainers and trainees. Varied Courses available, including Assessor and trainer training skills, Coaching and verifier skills.

We can run a range of training and coaching related courses based upon your need and budget.

Assessor and verifier development

Maintaining managers' competencies as part of a robust competence management system (CMS) is a significant activity that often goes overlooked.

However, any accreditation or qualification alone is not enough on its own in meeting the entire individual and business needs. This is because they are viewed as a "once-off" certification event with no ongoing commitment to maintain or further develop skills, knowledge and experience - an essential requirement of a good and compliant CMS for safety critical activities.

We have developed and implemented a highly successful modular competence management process that addresses these ongoing development issues and integrates both professional and occupational skills with those of the assessment system being operated by the organisation, providing a unique development structure relevant to ongoing business and individual needs.

We can deliver City & Guilds' Accredited Programmes through our approved centre. The Accredited Programmes we offer for those involved in assessment and quality assurance include:

  • Safety Critical assessment (for those involved in the initial and ongoing cyclic assessment of safety critical activities)
  • Safety critical verification (Management of Quality Assurance, CMS audit and Sampling, Quality Assurance of Safety Critical Assessment Activities)
  • Workplace coaching and assessment (for coaches and mentors whose roles include developing and monitoring progress of those who need to carry out safety critical activities

Assessor and verifier support

The quality of your assessors and verifiers is what makes a real difference in ensuring you are continually improving performance and reducing risk

We provide a range of support services for assessors and verifiers, including:

  • Providing advice and producing guidance
  • Creating guidance and support documents
  • Creating and delivering refresher training and updates to assessors and verifiers
  • Facilitating standardisation events to ensure expectations are communicated and understood
  • Checking the quality of assessment records made by individual assessors

Taken together these services will ensure that your assessor's and verifier's learning needs are identified, addressed and that they remain competent and current.

Emergency Response

Be prepared for emergency situations.

Emergency situations occur rarely, so effective training is vital to build competence to ensure that your people are able to respond appropriately and quickly. Our programmes focus on the core skills for effective emergency response, ensuring individuals are clear about their likely roles and responsibilities as well as developing the skills and personal attributes that are needed to respond quickly, safely and effectively.

We have a range of training to develop the skills of those individuals in your organisation who may be required to plan and run simulation exercises as part of your emergency preparedness arrangements.

For the rail industry we offer courses for the roles identified in the Railway Group Standards as having specific emergency response duties:

  • Train Operations Liaison Officer
  • Station Incident Officer

In addition we offer a more general appreciation workshop which provides an introduction to the principles of emergency planning and effective response.

Whilst our range of ready-to-run training programmes focuses on the rail industry, our expertise in this area means that we are able to rapidly develop emergency response training for other industries. Please contact us if you would like to discuss how training for your organisation could be developed.
