What is an EPA?
An End-Point Assessment (EPA) is the final assessment process that an apprentice must go through to complete their apprenticeship program in the UK. EPA is a mandatory process for all apprenticeships that follow the apprenticeship standards, which were introduced in 2017 as part of a UK government initiative to improve the quality of apprenticeships.
The EPA is designed to test whether an apprentice has gained the required knowledge, skills and behaviours set out in the apprenticeship standard. The EPA process is carried out by an independent organisation, known as an End Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO), which is approved by the UK government.
The EPAO will assess the apprentice’s knowledge and skills through a range of assessment methods, which may include practical observation, professional discussion, multiple-choice tests, assignments and presentations. The EPAO will also take into account any relevant prior learning or qualifications.
Once the EPA is successfully completed, the apprentice will receive a final grade, which is based on the EPAO’s assessment of the apprentice’s performance throughout the apprenticeship program. This final grade will determine whether the apprentice has successfully completed their apprenticeship and can move on to the next stage of their career.
